When you are getting ready to sell, you may still be living in your home when showings start to happen.

If you are still living at home you have probably done a little cleaning and staging, but we often overlook cleaning out the medicine cabinet, but forgetting to do this could be detrimental to your health if you have daily prescriptions.

Prescription drugs are stolen form homes for sale all the time. this can happen during showing appointments, or open houses.

Typically, a team poses as prospective buyers. As one person keeps the REALTOR busy with questions, others look for easily accessible prescription drugs to steal.

If you list with me, any individual showings will be logged through the SUPRA lock login, so you may be able to identify who was in the home when the meds go missing - if you notice it right after the showing, however this should not be used as your first line of defense against theft since it does not prove that anyone took anything or who, and does nothing for you during an open house when there are often times six or more guests in the home at once.

What can you do?

Here are 3 easy steps you can take to prevent drug theft while your house is for sale:

1. Secure medications the same way that you would a wallet, checkbook, jewelry, and credit cards.

2. Place prescription drugs in a locked container and hide them in a location that would take a significant amount of time to find.

3. Remove all controlled substance prescriptions such as pain, anti-anxiety, or ADD medications from your home. You can keep them on you when you are out or take them to your new place if you have one secured already.
